Attention animanga_lims soldiers! So I'm currently very sick, bored, and am eating cough drops like they're candy -- so I did this thing to distract me. XD This is originally for a friend, but then I started to ramble like a whacko, and I then thought that since a lot of you are competing and/or are nervous about competing, this advice might help anyone out. ^_^b

Here are some tips I taught myself during my run through round 1 of the LIMS, which might or might not help you out. Remember though, everyone gets crits no matter how you try to accommodate a LIMS crowd, and you never know how people will conceive your icon, so even though I won, DON'T look at this as a "sure thing". Plus, the day people stop having their own unique perspective for things is the day you'll be able to make a perfect icon in everyone's eyes (i.e. never). XD

1. Design -- This is probably the one thing I took closest to heart while competing. Especially in those later rounds where the contestants get down to the 30s, 20s, etc., your icon must have design. A simplistic cropped icon can have the most beautiful coloring in the world, but it won't get you far in a LIMS, where all the contestants are really trying to show how they can use textures, brushes, typography, and placement. A person will sometimes vote off a plainer icon over an icon that has a weird design that just doesn't work, just because it feels like the icon with the design had more work put into it. Try to think out of the box each round, but make sure to save your big ideas for those rounds towards the end (if you make it that far ♥).

2. Standing out can be BAD - Like tokyonoir once said, this isn't an icontest, so standing out can mean your death. If your icon is too weird, has too many brushes, too many textures, while you might think all of it might work to your advantage, the crowd could think the complete opposite. It's good to be daring, but remember, the victim who sticks out in a crowd over all the other victims is the one more likely to get shot by the killers. XD There's always that chance though that your icon stands out in the right way, and that's how PC is won after all, so don't be afraid to be daring either!

3. Manga vs. Anime rounds -- Let's be honest, anime images are hard to work with. I found while competing that the manga rounds are considerably tougher to get through then the anime rounds, because iconists are more accustomed to manga and really bring out their fighting determination in those rounds. Of course, especially when reaching the end, the anime rounds can get equally (and sometimes even more) tough. When manga rounds hit, put in some extra juice to keep yourself safe from the eliminations list. In contrast, also try hard in the anime rounds when some of the contestants are out of their element, you might just get PC!

4. Colors -- Watch out for colors, don't let your icon be too bright, don't let your icon be too dull, unless you honestly feel that once it's finished the coloring helped for it's overall design and has good balance. If there's too much of one color, you're in trouble. People will pinpoint an icon for elimination if it has too much pink, too much yellow, etc., it's like saying "Hey, over here! Look at my super colorful icon!!" which is correspondence with tip #2, about catching attention. A perfect example of this would be wicked_enough's elimination icon in the Challenge 1-11 (which I personally thought was very pretty ;~;).

5. Animation -- Be careful with animation. In correspondence to tip #2, it can be a call out for the kill of your icon, even if it does work for your overall look. I found that many contestants tended to avoid animation.

6. Details -- Details are very important, and the tiniest imperfection can mean your death. If you finish you icon and a part of your brush is overlapping into your characters hair, or maybe a small fraction of your lights are overriding into their eye, fix it. It's times like this the smudge tool comes in handy. XD No matter how small, all of these things add to the crowd's first impression of your icon.

7. Try different ideas -- If your first idea works, but still has has some flaws, don't enter your flawed icon -- try again! Variations can really come in handy, and you don't want to end up at the end of the week wishing you had tried that other crop with that other texture, which could've very well saved you. Also, be careful which variation you choose. Choosing the wrong one could very well mean your death. This is why it's better to get started early on your icon instead of procrastinating, so that you'll have plenty of time to give yourself a choice if your inspiration doesn't work out for the first few tries.

8. Pinpoint Reference -- This is what I think the crowd typically looks for when they're voting off icons, as I've referenced from my own crits. If you look through your icon as if you've never seen it before, and look for these kind of points, you might have less of a problem getting elim'd.

COLORS
- refer to tip #4. also -- if you have a dualtoned icon, do the colors clash? is there enough contrast in color? is there too much?
TYPOGRAPHY
-- is the text aligned? is it easy to read? does the caption fit? is it creative; eye-catching? does the font particularly fit with your overall look? does the color?
CROPPING
-- is the crop blocking off any vital parts of your image (i.e. half the eye)?
BLUR/SHARPNESS
-- does you icon look over sharpened even the slightest? does any part of the icon look more blurred/sharp then another part of the icon (i.e. text is blurry while image is sharper)?
EFFECTS/BRUSHES/TEXTURES
-- do all of the effects/brushes/textures fit with your overall look? is there anything that looks like it may not need to be there? are your effects cluttering the icon at all? is there anything that might be considered distracting instead of enhancing (i.e. light textures)?

9. Have fun! -- Remember that this is to have fun and to improve, to see how far you can get, so try to not to focus too much on winning. You must love your own icon and progress in the end! If not, where's the fun in competing? :D When you get your crits learn from them, work on your weaknesses, and try new things. A LIMS is a fantastic way to learn how to steadily improve on your own style of making icons!

10. Follow the Yellow-brick Road! -- ...wait, nevermind.

Yay! I found this, and thought that since I went through the trouble to convert it from FLAC for myself (which seriously took too many hours, DAMN YOU WINAMP. e_e;; ), it'd be nice to share for anyone who wants it.

Volume 2 is definitely A LOT better then Volume 1. For one, it doesn't make me feel like I'm going to have a seizure, but I guess it's not as brain-melting-ly hilarious either. XD;; I still wish they would've gone the more darker, mystical route for the Character CDs, but oh well. The arrangement in this one is tons better, even though it still has that slightly annoying "poppy kindergarten music" feel to it. I personally like it, especially "Ienai Kotoba", but I'm biased as a huge Yukino Satsuki-san fan. (^.^)/♥ She basically a veteran at image albums, having done at least...4, I think? She's also really talented to be able to sing to opposite to herself as both Shion and Mion in this.

Like the first one, this includes two main songs, an original drama, and two karaoke tracks. Enjoy!

I finally, finally finished Kanon. It was BRILLIANT. ;_; It didn't make me cry as much as I'd hoped (XD), and some parts were predictable, and the ending was a bit vague (WAAAAY clearer then AIR though...), but still really good. ♥ I still like AIR way better though. XD

Someone NEEDS to make a fanlisting for Akiko, she's is the most awesome anime mom ever. SPECIAL JAM 4LIFE. ♥ My eyes filled up with tears within seconds when she was...at the end...while she was...on the... ;__;

PREPARE FOR SPAZZY RANTING. Just finished the spring releases I had marked down, and now it's time for some ranting. After watching a few more episodes, I'll probably start doing reviews (no, not shitty summaries. real ones, like this. XDD). I really miss doing those, and this'll give me an excuse. :'D

Darker than Black:
...is the best thing since sliced bread. o_______o

It's awesome. Dude, it's so. intensely. awesome. By the time the opening theme started, I was so high on DTB, and my eyes were glued the whole episode! The story is awesome, and it has developing romance, and action, and mystery, and characters, and plot, and the music is awesome, and the animation is even awesome-ER, and OMG SO AWESOME.

I MEAN HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I SAID "AWESOME"?? WATCH THIS. WATCH THIS NOW FJKSJKAJ.

...I find it very ironic the one anime that I wasn't really hyped to download (other then Kaze no Stigma, WHICH I'M STILL WAITING FOR DAMMIT), since when I read the summary I thought the story sounded way too stoic for my tastes, and really only downloaded it because it's by BONES (who are AWESOME) and has music by Yoko Kanno, turns out to be my most favorite of all the spring releases. :O OMG AWESOMEAWESOME 23/10. ♥♥

Kamichama Karin:
First order of business: HOLY CRAP KARIN IS VOICED BY NAKAHARA MAI!!! YOU GUYS SUCK. ;___; WHY DID NO ONE WARN ME? @___@ DKADKLAJDSSALDLJSA!1

When Karin punched Kazune and started screaming at him, my mind shot to "USODA!". He he. Now every time Karin screams, I think "NUUUU, PUT THE MACHETE DOWN RENA!!". This is just going to break my brain, I know it...never would I thought I'd associate the adorableness of Kamichama to the nail-popping-bloody-maggots-inside-you-murderous-screams-haunted teenage-girl-ness of Higurashi...

Why, Jeezus? WHY? Dx

Apart from that (which, I'm totally kidding by the way. I love Mai-san and the fact she's Karin is awesome -- aside from some moments where her voice is REALLY ear-bleeding, but yeah), it was very good. :D I liked it a lot, it follows the manga well! The opening seriously weirded me out though, I had no idea what was going on and seriously paused the episode to check to make sure I downloaded the correct episode. Just imagine me sitting like L (because I sit with my knees to me while watching anime, wut?), with my hands on my face, peering at the screen and literally going "Whaaaa...?". X,D I guess they're going for that "preview of the end so you're more interested" set-up, haha. The opening song is TERRIBLE, btw. -_-;

Sola:
Okay, actually, it's not like AIR at all. :P The girl is spunky, and there's some hot old dude with a loli-complex chasing after her with a sword, and the boy is really adorable and sweet, and all those factors are very un-AIR for me...BUT it definitely does have a "Key" vibe to it. This show looks like it's gonna be really good though. I don't have much to say about it...it just does, I like it. :8

I also knew ahead of time that Nakahara Mai-san was in this one as well (yes, she gets around!), but y'know what? I TOTALLY FORGOT. She plays the silent gray-haired one that you can hardly hear, WTF? What a waste of her screechy moe loli abilities! XD

Romeo & Juliet:
Dude...it's totally not that great. X,D I'm sorry, it just isn't. I was expecting more. *sigh* IT'S CODE GEASS ALL OVER AGAIN, WHY, WHY? Damn you, hype. ;_;

Don't get me wrong, I like it, it's GOOD...just not amazing. Not much happened in the first episode though, so in it's defense it might get better. It wasn't much of a surprise Juliet was "Odin" (wtf?), I mean they showed it in the opening. XD Some parts were EXTREMELY corny, i.e. Juliet's "I FEEL SO PRETTY, OH SO PRETTY" montage after putting on her party dress, and the scene where Romeo & Juliet first met for real:

Juliet: [dramatically turns back] GASP!
Romeo: [blushes; looks surprised] GASP!
Juliet: [has trouble breathing]
Romeo: [also has trouble breathing; continues to blush more]
...wut. X,D

William Shakespeare actually IN the series? Awesome twist. ;D It makes me wonder if the ending is going to be like the actual story, or whether this couple will be an inspiration to William for a play where they do die, and anime!Romeo/anime!Juliet live happily ever after and shit.

The songs are nice. The opening is a total rip of "You Raise Me Up" or "Wind Beneath My Wings" whatever it's friggin' called, and that was surprising...but after doing some research, I suppose it was meant to be. XD The ending song ROCKS. I mean literally, it's a rock song, which I found quite awesome.

On a side note, I was very depressed that Mercutio wasn't African American. Nor did he scream "WAAAAAALT!" once. This is supposed to be Spakespeare on ANIME!CRACK, dammit it all. :'(

It looks like the fansubs are finally dropping in! I've already downloaded episode 1 of Darker than BLACK, Kamichama Karin, and Sola...however, no sign of Kono Aozora or Romeo x Juliet. :( What's with the fansubbers? I understand Kono Aozora, but RxJ? Which such a highly anticipated series, there should be TONS of fansubbers waiting to grab it and release it as fast as they can. *sigh* I'll try to scrape off some of these this weekend, but my mother doesn't work late anymore, so that doesn't give me much time for anime during the weekend. >.>; I can't watch anime while she's in the house, she always makes weird comments that make me feel self-concious like "Why are they talking so fast and stupid like that?", because she's a baggot. :[

I've also been downloading some manga (mostly shoujo and one-shots), some of which I read last night that include Asa mo, Hiru mo, Yoru mo, which is a story about a girl who got raped in Junior High, and then in High School a guy that looks just like her rapist admits he's in love with her. D: I actually feel really bad for the guy...he really likes her, and he can't help he looks like a rapist. I keep wondering why he doesn't just cut his hair though. XDD;;

Another is the one-shot Hotel, which is actually REALLY good, I recommend this one! A quick, but good read. The style of the manga is very American Comic-ish in my opinion, but it's a story set in the future where it's confirmed that the world is going to turn into a place much like Venus because of ~~Al Gore~~ Global Warming and such. In a few years all man-kind will be destroyed, so they create a type of tower (as well as an ark to send to space, but that's not important) to house the DNA of living creatures so that one day when the planet is back to it's normal settings, they might be able to rely on technology to re-create life on planet earth. The story then focuses on Louis, the "manager" of the hotel, which is a little robot guy that has a very human-like personality. It chronicles his managing of the "Hotel" (the tower), and how hard he tries to keep the Hotel standing, trying to keep the important contents safe for millions of years against the rough conditions of earth. :)

Also read I Won't Let You Become a Star (by Watase Yuu ♥), which is a one-shot, and it's cute. It's not AMAZING, but really cute. :P

Started also reading Love Celeb, which I also HIGHLY recommend, it's very good. :D The characters have great personalities, there's yummy smut, and it's just really fun. I love Gin! ♥ It's about a girl that wants to become an actress but is having a lot of trouble getting her "big break", so her weird manager drops her off at a place so she can sleep with someone important and get plugged into the business. However, she is a virgin, and of course doesn't want to do that! >:3 As she's about to get raped, a guy with silver hair saves her, but then displays that he obviously has some type of interest in her and says that he's going to "buy her". She escapes with her virginity in tact, but the next day she's mobbed by cameras, and realizes that she's become a star overnight somehow with the help of the silver-haired guy. It's kinda predictable where it goes from there, eh? I look forward to seeing how the relationship between girl-I-cannot-remember/Gin goes. ^_^ Did I mention that I LOVE GIN~? ♥ Silver-haired guys FTW! The heroine is also pretty spunky too. Her reactions to advances are hilarious, and she isn't so feeble like that girl that I can't stand from Desire Climax. >_>;;

*cough* Speaking of Desire Climax! I managed to scrape off a bit more of it. XD The manga has a lot more plot now, but it's just so weird...I'm starting to get SD+ vibes from it. EVERYONE HAS SECRETS! EVERYONE IS SLEEPING WITH EVERYONE ELSE! SOAPOPERAMOLESTIONBLAHBLAH! And the girl (forgot her name again) keeps getting molested over & over...the guy is so forward. So is the gardener. Her brother is pretty friendly too (NOTTOMENTIONOMGVOL3 WTFGAY? Dx). HAY~ why don't we just throw in a horny Grandpa while we're at it, eh? >_o;;

Like I said last time, I'm all for smut, but she acts like nothing even happened...I thought manga was supposed to be somewhat realistic, with complex human emotions and such? WHERE IS HER PLOTTED LAWSUIT, EH? ...wait, why am I reading this anyway? XD; 'Cause I'm waiting for it not to be so weird. *sigh* I'm too patient, even with manga. I do like it though, it just frustrates me a bit.

First of all, I'll put my biased-ness aside, and say one thing. Sanjaya...was actually not horrible tonight. >___>; It was his best performance yet, even if he speaks Spanish like a monkey with only one kneecap (wtf?). It still sucked, because his singing just does suck, and no mediocre level of progress will change that and make him worthy of being in the top 8 of AI.

There was a commercial during AI where they said that Sanjaya has actually surpassed the popularity of Justin Timberlake and *le gasp* HARRY POTTER?? D8 In conclusion, I've realized that there can only be one answer to Sanjaya and the effect he's causing on the world, and WHY he is still on AI: IT'S THE APOCALYPSE, WE'RE ALL GONNA DIIIIIIE.

I always knew that the world would one day come to an end because of an indian child with really weird hair. WHY DIDN'T THEY LISTEN TO ME?! ;-;

While we're still alive and not radioactive zombies, let me continue. Phil (Cancer-Dude) is probably gonna get voted off tomorrow (he or Haley, probably), he was probably the weakest. I think I now know why I've disliked Kate so much since season 1...

...my mind could sense the "Juliet" vibes all the way over the season 3, and was preparing itself for the awesomeness that is Juliet. ♥♥ XD

So yes, I'm currently in love with Juliet (from Lost, btw. not the anime one -- at least not yet XD SUBS 2 B HURRYING UP PLZ.). She's just too awesome and kickass! I started to like her ever since you "flashback" episode at the beginning of this season, but this Wednesday's episode just niched it for me. EVERYBODY WAS KUNG-FU FIGHTIN'~ I also love her look, I dunno if it's the actress with this weird facial expression, but it's seriously the only expression she ever makes (aka this one), but it's cool in a funny way. XD It's almost as if she's saying "I'm sarcastic and have a weird past, but you can't tell what I'm thinking, and you never ever will." with her eyes. I also love her name. XD Besides my love for Shakespeare based stories, it's just a really kickass name.

Not to mention Jack/Juliet is P-E-R-F-E-C-T. ♥ I mean, c'mon, they even have the same first letter to their name. It should've happened sooner; it's about time someone right for Jack comes along, because it's so obvious that Kate is never going to be with him. I just hope this one doesn't get killed off, and seriously, she's the most awesomeness new character to pop on since...ever. All the other ones sucked majorly, and basically ruined the whole show so much they had to kill every single one, so they have to keep this gem. XD Juliet is healthy for the plot!

I hate Jack, but his PMS-y-ness seems to fit with Juliet...how they're both so strong, a bit damaged, and have that drop of stoic-ness to them...it just fits, and now I don't hate Jack that much anymore. He gets new points because Juliet pointed out that he is now officially a DAMAGED CHARACTER -- I mean, doi, seeing the girl you love screwing your rival in a CAGE OF UBER HAWTNESS definitely counts, no?
